Incorporating tides and internal gravity waves within global ocean general circulation models: A review

چکیده
Until recently, high-resolution global modeling of tides has been done separately from the atmospherically-forced oceanic general circulation. Here we review emerging class models that are simultaneously forced by both atmospheric fields and astronomical tidal potential. Such simulate barotropic (surface) tides, internal near-inertial motions, eddying circulation, a partially resolved gravity wave (IGW) continuum spectrum (Garrett-Munk spectrum) simultaneously. We technical aspects such their myriad applications, for example, in satellite oceanography, operational boundary forcing regional models, tidal-cryosphere interactions, assessment future coastal flooding hazards changing climate with altered tides.

Concurrent simulation of the eddying general circulation and tides in a global ocean model
This paper presents a five-year global simulation of HYCOM, the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model, that simultaneously resolves the eddying general circulation, barotropic tides, and baroclinic tides with 32 layers in the vertical direction and 1/12.5 (equatorial) horizontal grid spacing. A parameterized topographic wave drag is inserted into the model and tuned so that the surface tidal elevations...
متن کاملHow stationary are the internal tides in a high-resolution global ocean circulation model?
The stationarity of the internal tides generated in a global eddy-resolving ocean circulation model forced by realistic atmospheric fluxes and the luni-solar gravitational potential is explored. The root mean square (RMS) variability in the M2 internal tidal amplitude is approximately 2 mm or less over most of the ocean and exceeds 2 mm in regions with larger internal tidal amplitude. The M2 RM...
متن کاملToward an internal gravity wave spectrum in global ocean models
High-resolution global ocean models forced by atmospheric fields and tides are beginning to display realistic internal gravity wave spectra, especially as model resolution increases. This paper examines internal waves in global simulations with 0.08° and 0.04° (~8 and 4 km) horizontal resolutions, respectively. Frequency spectra of internal wave horizontal kinetic energy in the North Pacific li...
متن کاملGlobal ocean circulation during 1992–1997, estimated from ocean observations and a general circulation model
[1] A three-dimensional oceanic state is estimated for the period 1992–1997 as it results from combining large-scale ocean data sets with a general circulation model. At the cost of increased computational load, the estimation (assimilation) method is chosen specifically so that the resulting state estimate is consistent with the model equations, having no artificial sources or sinks. To bring ...
متن کاملAtmospheric Gravity Waves and their Effects on the Global Circulation
A fundamental difficulty in modeling global atmospheric circulation is the strong interaction among motions on a wide range of space and time scales. Explicit numerical representation of all the spatial scales that determine the global atmospheric circulation is impractical. An example of such difficulties is the effect of small-scale inertia-gravity waves on the circulation. Inertia-gravity wa...
